Situated along 34th Street at the intersection of Broadway and Sixth Avenue, also known as the Avenue of the Americas, Herald Square is a destination for tourists as well as New York City professionals. Aside from the many shopping options in the area, Herald Square's buildings offer a wide range of office spaces for lease.

The "square" is actually comprised of a bow-tie shape. The northern triangle is Herald Square, and the southern triangle is called Greeley Square. Herald Square was named for the New York Herald, a newspaper that no longer exists but was once headquartered in the area. Greeley Square was named for Horace Greeley, the publisher of the New York Tribute and a competitor to the Herald.

At one point in history, Herald Square was the center for theatre in Manhattan. Today, it is one of Manhattan's greatest shopping destination, and perhaps most notably, home to Macy's flagship store. The actual square is paved and furnished with tables and chairs, attracting passerby laden with shopping bags as well as Midtown office workers on their lunch breaks. Greeley Square also provides respite from the crowded city streets, as it is landscaped as a lush urban park.

The area around Herald Square features many Manhattan Landmarks, including the Empire State Building, which is less than a block away. Pennsylvania Station, the James Farley General Post Office, Madison Square Garden and the Jacob Javits Convention Center are also located nearby.

Draw Upon the Foot Traffic of this Retail Mecca

Herald Square draws a great amount of foot traffic, with an estimated 100 million visitors per year. Macy's is the most famous tenant on the square, which serves as the terminus for the annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Another major retail presence in the area is the Manhattan Mall, anchored by J. C. Penney. Many other small boutiques and larger stores populate the area, including H&M, Sephora, and Forever 21.

Like the buildings of the neighboring Garment District, Herald Square's buildings are often light-industrial and commercial in character. Benefit from a Business Improvement District

Herald Square is located within a Business Improvement District (BID) that is operated by the 34th Street Partnership. The BID provides a variety of services, including sanitary pickup, security and maintenance of the landscaping elements. They are also responsible for the placing the tables and chairs that dot the square. Because it is so picturesque, Herald Square hosts many special events, free public programs serves as the backdrop for photo shoots. Like Bryant Park, Herald Square also contains a food kiosk that is operated by Tom Colicchio's 'wichcraft. There are also free toilet facilities.

Recently, a new project was enacted by the New York City Department of Transportation called the Broadway Boulevard. A portion of Broadway between 33rd and 35th Streets was closed to vehicular traffic in order to provide more space for pedestrians. This effectively doubled the areas of Herald and Greeley Squares.

Take Advantage of the Multitude of Transportation Options in Herald Square

Many major subway lines stop beneath or near Herald Square. The 34th Street/Herald Square station is served by the B, D, F, M, N, Q and R trains. The PATH train provides service to New Jersey from its 33rd Street Station. Penn Station also provides access to the 1, 2, and 3 trains as well as Amtrak train service for commuters.
