Columbus Circle’s Path from Gateway to Grandeur

Frederick Olmstead knew what he was doing when he decided to have a monument erected at the south western corner of his carefully designed Central Park. He knew that a circular public space would not only facilitate vehicular traffic, it would also make the park seem bigger by carving circular rotunda out of a block that would normally square.   As one of the great stages for NYC development, Columbus Circle has by real estate years gone rapidly through a series of architectural styles. While its main purpose was to serve as a gateway to the park (marked by a monument that survives to this day) developers quickly saw the potential in the space as a major commercial hub soon after its construction in 1905. By the 1950’s Columbus Circle was overshadowed by the gigantic Coliseum Convention Center, which was subsequently demolished in 2000.   What now stands as a complement to Columbus Circle is the Time Warner Center, a sleek and modern but tactful multi-use building that includes a Whole Foods, J. Crew, and on site transportation access.
