Appealing Office Space Location for International Firms

The United Nations area is an appealing location for commercial office space, particularly for companies that aim to attract an international clientele. It should come as no surprise to learn that the area has historically been a popular location for the headquarters of airline companies, for example.   Outside of the UN headquarters, there are several other buildings that provide space for agencies and programs within the organization, and also rent office space to other companies. These include DC-1 at 1 United Nations Plaza; DC-2 at 2 United Nations Plaza, UNICEF House at 3 United Nations Plaza; the UNITAR Building at 807 United Nations Plaza; and 380 Madison Avenue. Another high-rise building that provides commercial office space for rent is 860-870 United Nations Plaza, which features twin 38-story towers. They contain apartment space on upper floors, but provide over 300,000 square feet of office space in the base.

The United Nations Headquarters are located along Manhattan’s East River in Midtown. The complex, along with the surrounding neighborhood, which is referred to as Turtle Bay, occupies the area between Third Avenue and the East River, spanning between 42nd and 53rd Streets in the north/south direction.

An Eclectic Mix of Historic and Modern Architecture

The United Nations and Turtle Bay area was originally the site of a farmhouse in colonial times and later became an area for shipbuilding. In the late 1800s, residential brownstone buildings were constructed, such as those that line the iconic Beekman Place. The area features tree-lined streets and a large communal garden. In contrast, it  is also home to the iconic Chrysler Building and many other modern high-rise office buildings.

A Manhattan Landmark: the Headquarters of the United Nations

The focal point of the area, of course, is the United Nations headquarters. It is comprised of several low to high-rise buildings that have become known as Modernist icons. The complex was completed in 1952 and occupies a 17-acre parcel of land that stretches west of First Avenue and spans between 42nd and 48th Streets. The Franklin D. Roosevelt East River Drive runs underneath the complex.

Enjoy the Convenience of Grand Central Station and Major Roadways

Tenants and residents of the United Nations area and the Turtle Bay neighborhood enjoy a short walk to Grand Central Station, which provides access to the 4, 5, 6 and 7 subways as well as train service out of the city via Amtrak and MetroNorth. Car commuters from other boroughs or towns can reach the area by taking the 59th Street Bridge or FDR drive.
