New York City’s Upper East Side conjures images of stately townhouses and museums and ritzy shopping options. It is easy to understand why the area was originally known as the Silk Stocking District, as it is home to some of NYC’s wealthiest residents. The boundaries of the fabled neighborhood range from Central Park to the west and the East River, and in the north and south directions, it runs from 59th Street to 96th Street. Though much of the neighborhood is relegated to luxury apartments, co-op and condominiums, there are also many options for renting commercial office space.

The avenues of the Upper East Side are world-famous: Fifth Avenue, Park Avenue and Madison Avenue. There are many more options for office space rentals towards the East River, and it generally becomes more affordable on those avenues, including Lexington Avenue as well as Third, Second and First Avenues, respectively.

A Popular Location for Art Galleries, Diplomats and Doctors
Since the Upper East Side is home to Museum Mile and some of the city’s most notable cultural institutions, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Frick and The Whitney, it is no surprise that it has become a popular location for many art galleries. Most of these galleries tend to cluster along Madison Avenue and 57th Street.
Because of the neighborhood’s proximity to the United Nations, the Upper East Side is a popular location for many diplomatic organizations. Former mansions have been adapted into diplomatic missions, such as The Consulate-General of France, Greece, Italy, India, and Pakistan, among many others.
Many medical professionals, including psychiatrists, plastic surgeons and dentists, choose to rent offices within the Upper East Side, particularly those who cater to a wealthy clientele, or those who are affiliated with the area’s many hospitals, including Lenox Hill and Memorial Sloan-Kettering. There are many office spaces geared towards these different types of practices, both large and small.
Take Advantage of Improving Accessibility
The Upper East Side is accessible primarily by the 4, 5 and 6 trains. The line runs under Lexington Avenue, so unfortunately that means long walks for those located closer to the East River. However, it is not always a drawback as it often results in lower rents in these locations, and there are many cross-town buses that provide service and ease the commute. Soon, this commute will get even easier because the Second Avenue Subway is under construction. Businesses can take advantage of lower rents in the area now and position themselves in a location that will only become more desirable once the extension is complete.
