The largest urban complex constructed in Manhattan since the Rockefeller Center, the World Financial Center was designed by architect Cesar Pelli. It includes four Postmodern granite and glass office towers of differing heights, which Pelli attempted to blend with the existing urban landscape along the Hudson River. The land upon which it is sited, including adjacent Battery Park City, was created from landfill as a result of the construction of the World Trade Center.

The best-known feature of the World Financial Center is the winter garden, a glass cupola supported by a steel skeleton. It is planted with palm trees and contains cafes, shops and a succession of marble steps, which serve as the backdrop for concerts and other performances. Current tenants of 1-4 World Financial Centers include Fidelity, Battery Park City Authority, Mass Mutual, Bank of America, and the American Express Company, as well as numerous clothing retailers, restaurants and other shops. The complex is located near a ferry stop, as well as the A, C, E, 1, 2 and 3 trains.
